Arizona is two different grows in one year

Nobody who has grown in the low desert thinks of the season as one long stretch. Phoenix and Tucson give you a strong spring window from February into early June, then a stretch of June and July where a plant outdoors is simply trying to survive, then a second usable run once the worst of the heat breaks. Up on the Colorado Plateau around Flagstaff and Prescott it is a completely different job, with cool nights, real frost dates and a season closer to what a Rocky Mountain grower deals with. Advice written for one half of this state is often wrong for the other.

The four things that actually cost Arizona growers plants

• Sustained heat. Once daytime highs hold above 105 the stomata close, the plant stops working and no amount of feed fixes it. Shade cloth at 30 to 40 percent and afternoon shade beat any nutrient program.
• Hard, alkaline water. Tap water across much of the state runs high in calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate. It will drag your root zone pH up over a few weeks and lock things out. Test it before you blame the plant.
• Monsoon. July through September brings humidity spikes, blowing dust and wind that will lay over a tall plant overnight. Stake early.
• Dry air the rest of the year. Single digit humidity puts young clones under real transpiration stress. New arrivals want a dome or a humid corner for the first few days.

Which cuts suit the desert

Dry heat is one of the few climates where dense flower is not a liability, because bud rot is rarely the limiting factor outside monsoon weeks. That opens the door to Big Yielders and to the resin heavy Hash & Rosin if you are running material for extraction. Sativa and sativa leaning hybrids also handle desert heat better than most, which is why Gas and OG lines with some stretch in them do well in Arizona greenhouses where a squat indica would cook.

Indoors, the real fight is the room, not the plant. Summer garage grows in Maricopa County are a losing proposition unless you are willing to pay for the cooling. Growers who commit to a sealed, insulated space here get very consistent results and are in a good position to work through Pheno Hunted selections properly.

Every clone is rooted before it goes in the box, and transit time is the thing that matters most on a long haul, so ordering at the start of the week keeps the parcel moving. In summer, take delivery off the porch quickly. A box left in Arizona afternoon sun is the one risk we cannot pack around.
