That is not a criticism. Given the weather here it is usually the right call, but a New England basement has its own personality and it is worth understanding before you fill it with plants. In July and August a Connecticut cellar sits cool and damp, often above 65 percent humidity with no help at all, which is exactly the environment botrytis wants once flower gets dense. In January the same room can drop into the 50s and stall root growth entirely. A dehumidifier for summer and a heat mat or a small heater for winter will do more for your results than upgrading your lights.
Well water is the other basement issue. A lot of the state runs on wells with iron, sulfur or genuine hardness. If your fixtures stain, your feed schedule is already fighting something. Test before you build a program on top of it.
Last frost along the shoreline is usually early to mid May, later up in Litchfield County where the hills hold cold. First frost tends to arrive in the first half of October, earlier inland. That gives you a workable outdoor summer, and June and July in Connecticut are genuinely good growing weather, warm with regular rain and long days.
September is where it goes wrong. The tail end of hurricane season pushes tropical moisture up the coast, you get warm nights, heavy dew and multi day rain events precisely when flower is filling out. Anything with a tight, heavy cola will hold water in the middle and rot from the inside. The growers who do well here finish early, build for airflow and are willing to pull plants under cover when a system is coming.
For outdoor and greenhouse, pick faster finishing plants with open structure. Nighttime Indicas generally wrap up sooner, which matters when you are racing an October frost, but keep an eye on density and defoliate for air movement. If you would rather not gamble on the weather, the Easy To Grow cuts are forgiving of an imperfect year.
Indoors is where Connecticut growers can be ambitious. Once the room is stable, Fruit and Citrus and Dessert and Candy hybrids are popular here, and the best sellers list is a reasonable shortcut if you want cuts other people have already proven in a small room.
