Down through Kent and Sussex County the ground is sand. It drains fast, it warms early in spring, and it holds almost no nutrition on its own. That is why the farms down here run irrigation and heavy amendment rather than relying on the dirt. For a cannabis grower it means two things: you can get a plant in the ground earlier than a New Jersey grower on clay, and you will be feeding more often than any generic schedule suggests, because water carries your inputs straight past the root zone. Compost, biochar or a decent water holding amendment is not optional in that ground. Up north around Wilmington the soil is heavier and behaves more like the rest of the mid Atlantic.
The water table is high near the coast. Raised beds are worth the effort in any low spot, especially after a wet spring.
Delaware gets a genuinely long season. A clone hardened off in early May will usually have until mid October before frost, and the Atlantic moderates both ends of the year. Sea breeze helps too. Airflow off the water keeps a canopy drier than a still inland field, which is real protection against mould.
The bad part is everything else the Atlantic brings. August and September are humid and warm at night, which is prime bud rot weather. Coastal storms and hurricane remnants arrive at the worst point in flower, and wind off the water carries salt that will burn leaf edges on an exposed site. A windbreak on the seaward side is worth more than most people think.
Stake early, keep plants off wet sand with a layer of mulch, thin the interior of the plant for airflow in August, and be honest about whether you can finish before the first big fall system.
Outdoors, favour open structure and earlier finishing plants. The Classics & Haze lines suit humid coastal air better than a compact modern indica, and hybrids with some stretch let the breeze do its job. In a greenhouse or an indoor room, where you control the humidity, the heavier material makes sense. Big Yielders and Gas and OG both perform well for growers here who have committed to dehumidification. Sativa, indica or hybrid matters less than whether your air moves.
