This is the thing that catches out growers who moved down from up north. On the longest day of the year Miami gets about thirteen and a half hours of daylight. Chicago gets over fifteen. A photoperiod plant that would happily stay in veg all summer in Michigan can start showing flower in South Florida in June, because the light never gets long enough to hold it back. Plants put out in spring often want to flower far earlier than the calendar suggests, and growers here either supplement light to keep them in veg or plan around a much shorter vegetative window than the rest of the country works with.
The flip side is that the winter dry season, roughly October through May, is the best outdoor growing weather in the state. Lower humidity, mild nights, no daily storms. Plenty of experienced Florida growers treat summer as the off season and run their real outdoor plants in what the rest of the country calls winter.
June through September the pattern is the same most days: heat, a huge afternoon storm, then a still humid evening. Nights do not cool off, dew sits on everything, and any dense flower will rot. On top of that Florida never gets a killing frost in most of the peninsula, so pest populations never reset. Thrips, whiteflies, broad mites and budworms carry over year to year, and scouting has to be constant rather than seasonal.
Hurricane season runs from June into November and overlaps with flower for anyone growing on a normal schedule. Plants in the ground need staking and a plan for what you do with three days of notice. Plants in pots can be moved, which is one reason so many Florida growers stay in fabric pots on a driveway rather than digging beds.
Airy structure is not a preference here, it is the requirement. The Classics & Haze cuts and the sativa leaning Daytime Sativas are the traditional answer for the deep south, and there is a reason equatorial genetics historically ran in climates like this. Dense indica dominant plants outdoors in a Florida August are a rot risk no matter how well you tend them.
Indoors, with a properly sized dehumidifier and real air conditioning, you can grow anything, and that is where Gas and OG and the newest drops make sense. If you are starting out, take Easy To Grow cuts and get through one full summer before you commit to something demanding.
