Growing on the islands is a humidity problem first

Hawaii hands you something most of the mainland never gets: light and warmth that barely quit. Day length swings only a couple of hours between June and December, and the low end of that swing near 11 hours means outdoor plants can flip earlier and faster than a grower coming from a northern state expects. That is a gift for anyone who wants two or three runs a year. It also means a vegetative plant left outside will want to flower on you, so most island growers run supplemental light on veg plants or keep them inside until they are the size they want.

The harder part is water in the air. Windward slopes, Hilo side, the valleys behind Kaneohe, anywhere the trades stack up against a ridge, you are looking at high relative humidity most nights and rain that arrives without much warning. Dense flower rots there. Bud rot and botrytis take the biggest colas first, and by the time you see the wilted sugar leaf on top the damage is already three days old. Leeward and Kona side dries out considerably, but then you are managing salt in the wind, heavy sun, and irrigation water that can carry more dissolved minerals than you want.

Cuts that hold up in island conditions

• Airy structure over dense bricks. Sativa leaning plants and the Classics & Haze and Daytime Sativas groups tend to build looser flower that lets a breeze through. That single trait matters more in Hawaii than yield numbers do.
• Vigor for a long season. Big Yielders get room to work here that a Vermont grower never has, provided you can keep the canopy open and defoliated.
• Short finishers under cover. If you have a greenhouse or a covered room, Nighttime Indicas and dessert leaning hybrids are workable, because you control the rain.
• New growers. Start with Easy To Grow and learn what your site does in a wet week before you spend a season on a finicky pheno.

Salt air is a real factor within a few hundred yards of the water. Rinse foliage with fresh water after a hard blow, and watch for tip burn that looks like nutrient excess but is actually chloride and sodium loading. Catchment water is usually soft and clean; county water on some islands runs harder. Test it once rather than guessing all season.
