Anyone who has farmed here knows the state does not behave like one place. The Snake River Plain around Boise, Nampa and Twin Falls is high desert: hot, bright, bone dry in July and August, with single digit humidity in the afternoon and irrigation water that comes off basalt and runs hard. North of the Salmon River, up through Coeur d Alene and Sandpoint, you get a maritime influence, real rain, cool nights and a fall that closes in fast. Central Idaho at elevation is a different animal again, where frost in early September is not unusual and the season is genuinely short.
The problem in southern Idaho is not mold. It is heat, vapor pressure deficit and water chemistry. Afternoon highs in the mid 90s with almost nothing in the air push plants to close stomata and stall. Plants transpire hard, salts concentrate in the root zone, and calcium moves badly, which shows up as tip burn and stunted new growth that growers often misread as a feeding problem. Practical fixes: shade cloth in the worst two weeks of summer, watering early and again late rather than at noon, mulch on any outdoor container, and a hard look at your source water. Well water across the plain often carries meaningful calcium and bicarbonate. Know the number before you build a feed schedule around it.
Heat tolerant, tough structured cuts do best. Look at Gas & OG and Old School lines, which historically came up in dry hot conditions and hold their vigor. Easy To Grow is the honest starting point if this is your first outdoor season in the desert.
Up north the calculation flips. Latitude near 48 degrees gives you long summer days, which is excellent for veg, but the season ends abruptly. September rain arriving on dense flower is how most northern Idaho crops get lost, and once botrytis is in a cola it spreads through the middle of the plant. Prioritize early finishing indicas and hybrids from Nighttime Indicas, keep the canopy open, and plan to be done rather than pushing for two more weeks of swell. A greenhouse or hoop with roll up sides is worth more here than any nutrient product.
Given the extremes at both ends of the state, plenty of people just run a room.
