Dense flower finishing outdoors in September, right when the fall rain pattern sets in, is the single most common way people lose a crop in this state.
The state runs about 340 miles north to south, and that is roughly three weeks of frost date difference. Rockford is typically done by early October; Cairo can run considerably later. Summer day length peaks around 15 hours in the north, closer to 14 and a half in the south, which is plenty for strong veg growth. Spring is the real constraint. Cold, saturated soil in April and May will sit a transplant in place for a month, so most people veg indoors and put out later than they think they should.
Much of central Illinois sits on genuinely good soil, deep and fertile, which flatters outdoor growers. It also holds water. Raised beds or mounded rows pay for themselves the first wet June. Municipal and well water across the state is frequently hard, with high bicarbonate that drifts your root zone pH upward over a season. If your pH keeps climbing no matter what you feed, that is your answer.
