Most growing advice starts with light. In Indiana it should start with water, because a very large share of the state drinks and irrigates from limestone aquifers. Around Indianapolis, Bloomington, Lafayette and most of the karst country in the south, tap water routinely runs 250 to 400 ppm before you add a single nutrient, dominated by calcium and bicarbonate. That bicarbonate buffers your pH upward, which locks out iron and manganese, which shows as pale new growth with green veins. Growers chase it with more nutrients and make it worse. If you take one thing from this page, get a cheap TDS meter and a pH pen and find out what you are actually feeding before you blame the plant or the cut.
Indiana runs roughly a 160 to 190 day frost free season depending on how far south you are. Spring is unreliable. May can hand you a 28 degree morning in the north after two warm weeks, which is why experienced growers here veg indoors and set plants out around Memorial Day rather than gambling in April. Summer is warm and thoroughly humid, with dew points that sit in the high 60s and low 70s for stretches. August thunderstorms come through hard, and wind plus a fully loaded plant equals broken branches, so stake earlier than feels necessary.
September is the decision point. Fall rain arrives while dense flower is still finishing, and botrytis follows within days. Northern Indiana growers near South Bend also catch lake effect cloud and moisture earlier than the rest of the state.
A lot of Indiana growing happens in a basement or an insulated garage. Basements stay cool and damp through summer, which means dehumidification during flower is the real cost of the operation, not the lights. Garages swing hard: January can drop a room below freezing and July can push it past 95. Insulate, seal, and size your equipment for the extremes rather than the average.
