Iowa growing gets described as easy because the soil is good. The soil is good. Everything else takes planning. The first thing that will surprise a grower moving here from a coast is wind. Open ground across the state means sustained afternoon wind through most of the summer, and a derecho is not a theoretical event. Plants that are not staked or caged from early flower will lie down. Wind also strips moisture off leaf surfaces fast, so containers dry out much quicker than the same pot would in a sheltered yard, and a five gallon fabric pot in July can need water twice a day.
From roughly mid July through August, corn and soybean transpiration pushes dew points into the 70s across central Iowa. Nights stay warm and saturated. That combination is what feeds bud rot later, because the spore load builds all summer and then finds dense flower in September. Growers around Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and the Iowa river valleys deal with this every year. Open canopy, aggressive lower defoliation, and honest spacing between plants do more than any spray.
Frost free runs about 150 to 170 days, later start in the northwest, earlier finish in the north. That is a genuinely narrow window for a full outdoor run. Practical approach: veg indoors through May, set out around the first week of June with plants already 18 to 24 inches, and choose cuts that finish rather than cuts that go long. An early October frost will end an unfinished plant and there is no negotiating with it.
Most of the state runs hard water off limestone and glacial drift, commonly 300 ppm or more with strong calcium and magnesium. That is not automatically bad, but you should be subtracting it from your feed rather than adding a full cal mag dose on top. Some rural wells also carry nitrate. Test once, adjust the schedule, and stop guessing.
