Maine gives you something almost no other state on this list does: real northern day length. Up near Presque Isle you are close to 16 hours of daylight in late June, and even Portland clears 15 and a half. Plants veg hard under that. The catch is on both ends. Spring soil stays cold well into May, especially inland and in the western mountains, and fall arrives early with a first frost that can land in mid September in Aroostook County and the Rangeley area. The coastal strip from Kittery up through Camden runs milder and later, moderated by the water, but it pays for that with fog.
Coastal Maine fog is not an occasional thing. It rolls in overnight and sits, and a canopy that stays wet for twelve hours at 55 degrees is the ideal environment for botrytis. Add September rain on top of it and dense flower is at genuine risk. Growers along the coast should either finish early or grow under cover. Inland, the problem is less mold and more simply running out of season. Cold nights in September slow ripening, so a cut that claims eight weeks will take longer in a Maine October than it will in a room.
Much of Maine sits on acidic glacial soil, thin in places, with a low natural pH and a fair amount of granite ledge. Native ground is often naturally low pH, and well water in many areas is soft with low alkalinity, the opposite problem to the limestone states. Soft water means your feed swings pH easily, so buffer with a calcium source rather than assuming your water carries it. Some coastal and inland wells also carry arsenic or iron; a well test is a normal thing to do here and worth doing.
