Growers in the humid half of the country spend the whole season fighting rot. In Montana you mostly do not. Summer relative humidity in the valleys often sits in the twenties and thirties during the day, and flower dries out between rains instead of holding water in the core. That opens the door to cuts nobody should attempt outdoors in the Gulf states: tight, dense, resin heavy flower from the Gas and OG and Nighttime Indicas shelves can genuinely finish outside here, provided the calendar cooperates.
What Montana takes back is time. Frost is possible in the high valleys in June and again in early September, and in some years the usable window is barely a hundred days. Elevation drives it more than latitude. A grower at 3,000 feet near Missoula has a different season from someone at 5,000 feet outside Bozeman, and both are different again from the plains east of the Divide, which are hotter, windier and drier still.
The practical rule is to choose fast finishers and start indoors under lights, then move out once nights hold above the mid forties. Rooted clones give you a head start that seed cannot, which matters more here than almost anywhere.
A forty degree drop between afternoon and dawn is normal in July. Plants handle it, but they slow down, and cold roots in the small hours cost you growth. Get pots up off cold ground, use mulch, and consider dark coloured fabric containers that pick up warmth in the morning. In flower, cold nights bring out heavy colour, which looks great and is not a problem, but do watch for condensation on flower at dawn if you are near a river bottom.
A simple unheated greenhouse is the highest value upgrade in this state. It adds weeks on both ends, stops hail, and buffers the night swings. Indoors, the dry winter air is the thing to manage. Rooms under lights can run below thirty percent humidity in January, which stresses fresh transplants badly. Keep new arrivals covered for a few days while roots settle in.
Montana is one of the longer transits we ship, so timing matters more than it does for a customer two states over.
