Growing in Omaha and growing in Scottsbluff are not the same job. The eastern third of Nebraska is corn belt: humid, hot, with dew points in the seventies through July and August, and the same mould pressure any Midwest grower knows. Whatever else changes across Nebraska, the wind does not. Sustained prairie wind snaps branches, shreds fan leaves, and dries containers faster than most growers plan for. A five gallon pot that lasts two days in a still backyard can go dry in one here. Three things help more than anything else: a real windbreak, low and wide training rather than tall single colas, and staking that goes in early rather than after the first storm bends everything sideways.
Late spring and early summer bring supercells across the whole state. Hail can end an outdoor run in minutes. If you are serious about the crop, grow under something. Even a basic hoop with plastic over the top and open sides gives you hail protection, wind reduction and rain off the flower, and it is the single best money a Nebraska grower can spend.
Most of the state draws from the Ogallala and other groundwater that comes out hard and alkaline. If your feed pH drifts up between waterings, that is why. Test once, adjust your program, and stop chasing symptoms. Soils range from deep loess in the east to sand in the sandhills, so drainage and water holding capacity vary wildly from county to county. Fabric pots with your own mix removes that variable entirely.
The season here runs roughly late May to early October, shorter in the west, which means you want plants that finish rather than plants that drag.
We ship Monday through Wednesday only. That rule exists so nothing we send is stuck in a sorting hub over a weekend, which is where clones die. Everything ships rooted from our own rooms. Nebraska is a longer haul than our nearby states, so plan for a Monday or Tuesday label, particularly in July.
