Most of North Dakota gets somewhere between 110 and 130 frost free days. Around Fargo you might plant out at the end of May and see a killing frost in the third week of September. Further north and west that window is tighter still. Everything about growing here comes back to that number, and it is the reason a cut that works fine in Missouri can be a total loss on the northern plains.
There is a second squeeze that catches people out. In late June the sun is up for roughly sixteen hours across the state. Long days keep outdoor plants in vegetative growth well into July, so flower starts later than it would further south, and then frost arrives earlier. You are burning the season at both ends. The practical answers are to run plants that flower fast once they start, to start them large so the veg time is already banked, or to pull the tarp and force an early flip on a light deprivation frame.
Open prairie wind is relentless and it does not just snap branches. Constant air movement dries pots out faster than the same plant in a sheltered yard, tears leaf edges, and works root balls loose in the hole. Stake at transplant, not after the first storm. Build a windbreak on the exposed side if you have one to build. Nights cool off sharply even in midsummer, and a run of 45F nights in late August will slow ripening right when you cannot afford it. Black pots and raised beds help hold daytime heat into the evening. Summer hail is a genuine risk on the plains and it is the single best argument for growing under cover.
Realistically, most serious growing here happens inside. That brings its own list: dry winter air well under 25 percent humidity that invites mites, heating costs from November through April, and hard alkaline well water in much of the state that runs high in calcium, magnesium and sometimes iron. Test your source, and expect to acidify rather than fight pH drift blind. A greenhouse extends the season on both ends and is probably the highest value thing you can build here, especially with a small heater to hold off the first frosts.
