After enough conversations with people running plants between Toledo and Marietta, the same three things come up again and again:
None of those are hard to beat, but all three punish people who assume Ohio is an easy middle of the country climate. It is not. It is a wet climate with a moderate season.
A finished or half finished basement is the default grow space in this state, and for good reason: stable temperatures, concrete floors, easy drainage. The catch is summer. Cool walls plus warm humid outside air means relative humidity in an Ohio basement can sit above 65 percent for weeks without a dehumidifier doing real work. In late flower that is how you find gray fuzz inside a cola you were proud of. Size the dehumidifier for the room rather than the tent, and vent the water out rather than emptying a bucket. Winter flips the problem: furnace air drops humidity into the twenties, which is when spider mites get going.
Frost usually holds off until early to mid October across most of the state, later along the Lake Erie shore where the water moderates things, earlier in the eastern hills. That gives a workable outdoor season, but the last four weeks of it are often overcast and damp. Cuts that ripen in nine weeks rather than eleven are worth a lot here. Northern Ohio also gets genuine cloud cover through winter, so anyone planning a passive greenhouse should not count on much useful light between November and February without supplementing. Soils vary from heavy glacial clay in the north and west to thinner ground in the Appalachian southeast, and in both cases raised beds with real drainage beat fighting the native profile.
Given the damp autumn, mold resistance matters more than raw weight for outdoor runs. Look for open structure rather than the densest bud you can find. Indoors, where you control the environment, that constraint disappears and you can chase whatever you actually want to smoke. Dessert and Candy and Gas and OG lines both do well in a controlled Ohio basement, and growers who want something that does not turn up in every dispensary should look through Breeder Cuts and Clone Only.
