Pennsylvania is one of the most heavily wooded states in the country, and the most common outdoor mistake here is not a nutrient problem or a pest problem. It is a site that gets five hours of direct sun instead of eight. Mature oaks and maples throw long shadows, and a spot that looks bright in April when the canopy is bare will be in half shade by the end of May. Before you commit a plant to a spot, watch it across a full day in leaf out. Anything under six hours of direct sun and you are growing a smaller, looser plant no matter what cut you buy.
Spring here is soggy. Cool wet soil in April and May stalls young roots and invites damping off, so there is no advantage to putting clones out early. Wait for the soil to warm properly, usually the back half of May in the southeast and into June at elevation. Summer brings mugginess and evening thunderstorms, and by late August dew sits heavy on the canopy overnight. That is when powdery mildew shows up on the fan leaves and botrytis starts working inside the densest colas. The countermeasures are the boring ones that work: wide spacing, an opened up inner canopy, and choosing plants with some air in the bud structure rather than the tightest thing available.
Frost timing varies more than people expect. Around Philadelphia and the lower Susquehanna you often hold on into late October. On the Allegheny plateau, in the Poconos and up near Erie, the first frost can land in the last week of September. Know your own date and pick a flowering window that fits inside it.
The old stone and brick basements across the state are good rooms with one flaw: summer humidity. Cool masonry plus warm damp air outside means the room sits wet from June through September and a proper dehumidifier is the difference between a harvest and a compost pile. Rural growers on well water should test before building a feed. Iron, sulfur and hardness are all common in this state, and iron in particular will clog drip emitters and stain everything it touches. Municipal water in the southeast is treated but often on the hard side.
