Nowhere here is far from the water

No part of Rhode Island sits more than about 25 miles from the ocean, and that single fact shapes every grow in the state. Marine air moderates the temperature at both ends, which is genuinely useful: summers rarely bake the way they do inland, and the first frost along the bay and down in South County often holds off into the back half of October. In exchange you get fog, dew and overnight humidity that can sit in the 80s for weeks in August and September, which is the same stretch when outdoor plants are stacking their heaviest flower.

That is the whole problem in one sentence. The climate gives you a long finish and then tries to rot what you grew in it. Everything below is about winning that trade.

Working with wet air

Airflow beats fungicide. Space plants further apart than a small yard makes comfortable, strip the interior of the plant so wind can pass through instead of around, and run a fan on the canopy overnight if you have power to the spot. Get pots up on blocks or a room so damp ground is not wicking into the root zone. Most importantly, choose flower structure deliberately. A dense, tight cut that would be a trophy in Colorado will hold fog against itself here and turn in the middle. Looser, more open bud is worth more than an extra ounce you never get to dry.

September is also nor easter and hurricane season on this coast. A soaking blow that lays a top heavy plant into wet soil ends the season faster than any mold. Stake early and cage anything large.

Small spaces and salt

Housing here is dense and yards are small, so a lot of Rhode Island growing happens in a tent in a spare room or a basement in Providence, Pawtucket or Warwick. In a four by four, plant selection is mostly about height control: cuts that hold a short internode and take topping well, rather than anything that doubles in stretch. Along the shore, salt spray on the leaf and sandy fast draining soil are both real. Sandy ground leaches nitrogen quickly, so smaller and more frequent feeding beats one heavy dose that washes past the roots in the next rain.
