The air can be 75 degrees in the third week of May while the ground is still under 55, and a clone put into cold soil will sit there doing nothing for two weeks while its roots refuse to move. Wait for soil, not air, or start in containers you can bring in overnight and transplant when the ground is genuinely warm.
Midsummer here is more humid than people from outside the state expect. Dew points in the 60s and 70s are routine in July and August, and mornings in the Kettle Moraine or anywhere near the lakes come with soaking dew that hangs on the canopy for hours. Combine that with the cool nights of early September and you have textbook botrytis conditions. Anything with a dense, heavy cola is at risk from the moment flowers start filling.
Along Lake Michigan the water moderates the season: spring warms slowly, autumn frost holds off a little longer, and there is more fog. Inland and to the northwest, the season is shorter and colder at both ends. A site with morning sun and an open eastern exposure dries the dew off earlier, which is worth more than almost any other adjustment you can make.
Much of southern and eastern Wisconsin draws from limestone and dolomite aquifers, and tap water commonly runs 300 to 500 ppm with a high alkalinity buffer that fights any attempt to lower pH. Measure the starting EC and reduce your calcium and magnesium inputs accordingly, because a standard feed chart assumes you are starting near zero. If you are running an indoor room and seeing persistent lockout, reverse osmosis usually solves more than another bottle will.
